Deep Insults...
Deep Insults. Got an email from my publisher the other day (no, not the one asking “where the heck is the next book” – I have that one too, this is a different email):
FYI. See below. We discovered today that we messed up Sean's quote in the most recent printing of Tom's book.
Apress apologizes. Most of the copies from the most recent printing are still in our warehouse. Gary says we're still in possession of 95% of the copies that are bad, so the damage is not widespread. Our current plan is to sticker over the quote.
I immediately asked them for a copy of “unadulterated” version of course – for posterity. Here is a picture of the quote (if you click through and look at the “medium” image – it is quite readable:

It is sort of like having an “Easter egg” hidden in software. There are at least a couple dozen/hundred books out there with the “deep insults” quote. Collectors Items I think. Two versions of the collectors edition – do you have the version with the “insult” or the version with the sticker blanking it out!
I find it all very funny.
Well, to everyone that has the long weekend - have a good one. I'm taking off early this morning. Time for travel soccer once again. At least I spent one short night in my own bed (from hotels in Florida to hotels over the weekend in Virginia)...

The funny (sad?) thing about that, is that Sean is one of the nicest guys on the planet. "Insights", anyone?
Not just "insults" but deep insults. Pretty funny. Gotta love the typos. Now I wonder if it was the only one ;-D.
Enjoy the weekend!
Tom, we all know that if anyone could come up with "deep" insults, you would be the one. And you would have evidence to back them up :-)
I treasure my copy of this rather humorous blunder. It is on my shelf near the accidental, purple version of Feuerstein's PL/SQL Pocket Reference and the French SQL*Plus translation with my name mispelled on the cover.
Hi
I wonder what price is it going to reach on ebay ;)
I myself would pay let's say... up to 500% of the bookstore value for this one.
Perhaps it's a good idea - Normal version for only $39,99 and 'special, easter egg version' for (only!) $99,99
Have a nice weekend ;)
Shall we start the bidding?
I have one copy with the typo.
I always wondered about that.
I haven't found any other glaring errors and I have read the book a few times.
Excellent book by the way sir.
I guess we found another reason to add to Mr. Awad's
15 Reasons Why Books Have Problems
- Publishing mistakes in the book are hard to fix.
Just wondering, what book is this typo in? Is it the Expert Oracle: Database Architecture?
Dang, that's what I get for rushing out and buying an early printing.
The funny thing is, as I turned around to check for the quote, being primed to see "insults," I thought I saw a book in the Oracle pile named Oracle Insults.

echo "set sqlprompt \'$spew> \'">>~/login.sql
(your environment may vary)
You should have no problem selling those copies on eBay. Just checked my copy, it's normal :| Very informative book by the way.
That page with quotes isn't even in my copy, but I do have the version that has and part of a chapter missing (don't worry, Tom already corrected the problem for me)
Frivolous insults are easy; only the true Oracle expert can deliver profound insults.
At least we now have a backup presentation for our NYOUG meeting at the start of June. "Oracle Deep Insults" sounds like a great keynote.
What I'm curious to know is at what point in the process the "mishap" happened ... and I'm not talking about the QA/verification part (yes, maybe someone missed it there), but the actual event of the original word being replaced with "insults" [and not just some gibberish!] … you know, it is even grammatically correct – plural!
Expensive for the publisher ... but kind of naughty funny nonetheless.
Maybe we could have "Deep Insults" tell us some secrets al la "Deep Throat" (grin)
Gabe's comment: (What I'm curious to know is at what point in the process the "mishap" happened )
Well, must have been the spell checker in some Windoze word processor?
"Well, must have been the spell checker in some Windoze word processor?"
Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Mine insists that "tnsnames.ora" should be "tsunamis.ora"...
Well, must have been the spell checker in some Windoze word processor
Makes sense.
First suggestion Word makes for "insugts" is "insults" ... second one is "insights".
One click of a difference indeed.
Mine must have been one of the first printing as there are no quotations inside the front cover.
That's funny though and the guys are probably right in that the spell checker with automatic correction probably changed it into insults.
At least, the error got caught before all the books went out.
Damn! I missed it. I only have an E-Book. :(:(

Yesterday I got the "deep insults" copy... Wow...
